The 1960s were a tumultuous time in the US, and the San Francisco Bay Area holds a special place in that history. There to capture the music was Chris Strachwitz and his fledgling label Arhoolie Records. But Chris' idea of what was worth documenting is not what normally comes to mind when we think of 60s San Francisco. Chris' passion was and is down home roots music. This collection is the beginning of Chris' plunge into documenting a world, part traditional, part contemporary, that no longer exists but forms the basis for one of the great record labels of American music, Arhoolie Records.
Hear Me Howlin' comes with 4 Compact Discs with 72 tracks of over 4 hours & 40 minutes of music, including 38 previously unissued tracks and some artists who have never before appeared on Arhoolie Records. Also included is a 136 page 8.5"x11" hardcover book, full-color, with over 150 photographs.

Blues, Ballads, & Beyond: The Arhoolie 50th Anniversary Boxset (Audio CD) Four discs-67,67,74,73 minutes each approximately. The sound varies slightly but, overall, is very good. Some tracks were recorded in the studio, some were recorded in living rooms, and some were recorded at live venues. The discs are packed inside sealed plastic envelopes, two each inside the front and back covers of the hardcover (8 1/2" x 11") book. I suggest you keep the discs in standard jewel (double or single) cases for protection. The 136 page hardcover book is of high quality, and the contents well thought out. The photographs (mostly b&w some color), and the graphics (b&w/color) are also high quality. This is, in part, due to the use of a good quality paper stock and finish. There's a list of artists and songs on the back cover. The text was written by Adam Machado, and is concise and well written. Another plus is the artist essays follows the track listing, making it easy to learn more about the musicians. This little gem of a release from Arhoolie... Blues, Ballads, & Beyond: The Arhoolie 50th Anniversary Boxset (Audio CD) This incredible collection of music (almost five hours!) is accompanied by a hard-bound large-format (8x11) book of 136 pages with photos, details, stories, and bios. The book is worth the asking price by itself just for its unique history and overview of the folk and blues scene from the late 1950s onward.I have listened to Arhoolie records since at least 1964 when I spent a year living in Berkeley but I had no idea of the breadth and scope of Arhoolie founder Chris Strachwitz's experience and influence on the music. Keep in mind that the Bay Area scene was the birthing ground not just of the Sixties movement but a cultural nexus whose impact is still being felt today. And the blues cuts are just great! I have personally interviewed many of the legendary blues players included on this collection and I know their music. This is the real deal. And there are 38 cuts never before released including (to my surprise) legendary Travis-style guitar instrumentalist... Blues, Ballads, & Beyond: The Arhoolie 50th Anniversary Boxset (Audio CD) This book and CD set is such a treasure of music, photos, anecdotes, nostalgia, and history, that I think it is a must for any Blues aficionado who wants to know more about the Blues and Folk revival of the 1960's and 1970's.The book is presented in short 2-3 page chapters with photos and words by Chris Strachwitz - one of the central figures in reviving and preserving so much Blues, Folk, and regional ethnic music in America over the past 50 plus years through his love of the music and its performers, and the creation of his independent record label Arhoolie records. The music discs contain a huge sampling of rare and unreleased tracks by many Blues, Folk, and even Jazz icons that are long gone but not forgotten. This set really is a rare treasure, and well worth the price, considering that you get a real full sized monograph style book (not a booklet or pamphlet), and 4 full CDs of music! |
